A distortion pedal called PUPPY has been created through a collaboration between Freak Guitar Lab—a guitar brand founded by Mattias “IA” Eklundh, guitarist of the Swedish progressive metal trio Freak Kitchen—and Kogalashi Sound Magic.

Mattias, known for his mastery of 8-string guitars, placed particular emphasis on the low-frequency range unique to multi-string instruments.
To achieve both a thick, heavy, deeply distorted sound and clear note separation, the pedal is equipped with a Growl control that adjusts the low-end frequencies.

It’s designed not only for 8-string guitars, but also for 7- and 9-string instruments, as well as for drop tunings such as drop D.

Additionally, the Texture control changes the distortion character, while the Edge control shapes the high-end frequencies—allowing players to achieve smooth, singing lead tones.

Control

Main Features

Growl: Adjusts the low-end frequencies.

For a standard 6-string guitar, setting it around the 12 o’clock position is usually sufficient. However, when using down-tuning or multi-string guitars—especially 8-strings like Mattias’s with a low E—you can increase it past 12 o’clock to achieve a deeper, heavier sound.

Texture: Adjusts the character of the distortion.

Increasing it creates an open, raw character, while rolling it back results in a smoother, more controlled sound.

Edge: Adjusts the high-end frequencies.

"SILVER" delivers a fat, open tone, while "GOLD" offers a smooth, familiar, and rich sound.

Level: Adjusts the output volume.

Acts as the master volume, controlling the final output level of your sound.

Gain: Adjusts the amount of distortion.

The pedal is designed to produce ample distortion even when the Gain control is set to minimum.

Mattias “IA” Eklundh is an innovative guitarist from Sweden, best known as the frontman of the progressive metal band Freak Kitchen.

Renowned worldwide for his astonishing technique, unique rhythmic approach, and intelligent sense of humor, Mattias has captivated countless fans with his one-of-a-kind sound.

Beyond his work with Freak Kitchen, he continues his solo project Freak Guitar and organizes the Freak Guitar Camp—a creative retreat set in the Swedish countryside, where he shares his musical philosophy and distinctive techniques with aspiring guitarists.

His playing goes far beyond conventional guitar technique, incorporating not only advanced methods like sweeping and tapping, but also inventive use of everyday objects as musical tools, showcasing his boundless creativity.
